Resolution:
A number of Printronix P5000 series printers with the Printronix
C/T option that shipped
between May 15, 1998 and June 30, 1998 may have a defective
Smart-Tee. The problem
manifests itself by not being able to communicate with the host
computer when installing the
printer. Typical failures you will see are 'Vary On Pending'
status error and not being able to
communicate with the computer. The problem is such that
communication will never be
established. The problem is solid and will show up immediately.
The problem Smart-Tees
however do allow other devices to continue to work via the pass
through. If you are able to
communicate with the host with the new printer this is not the
problem and you should continue
with your troubleshooting.
The defective Smart-Tees are the ones with the 26 inch
pigtail, part number 140752-002. The
problem does not occur with Smart-Tees with the 12 inch pigtail,
part number 140752-001 The
26 inch Smart-Tees typically ship with the cabinet model. The 2
different Smart-Tees are
functionally interchangeable.
The problem parts have wires on pins 7 and 14 reversed. Here
is a way to check for this
problem with an ohm meter: Place a pinheader on location 7 of
the DB15, then looking at the
other end, keeping the round side for each of the connectors
with the tab in the upper position,
measure the pin on your left side. This should be a short to pin
7. If 7 - 2,3 measures around
110 Ohms, The connector is mis-wired and needs to be reworked.
If 7 - 2,3 measures 0 Ohms
the connector is wired correctly.
See drawing of Smart-Tee below
Rework instructions to correct the crossed wiring: Swap wire
at pin 7 with pin 14 in the DB-15
connector. This should be done carefully else intermittent
problems could be induced.
